The Original Sample:
Changing Times feat. Frankie Beverly by Maze
A song in illa’s WBS sample queue has been stolen and the thief is now threatening to sample it in the worst way possible and make all of Earth listen to his awful beat. To combat this imminent threat, illa has assembled a group of Earth’s mightiest producers to save the world– and if not save it…avenge it. This week our heroes will push the limits of their creativity and become the team they never thought they could be…
This week’s sample is an offering from the legendary soul group Maze from their 1980 release, Joy and Pain. The song is called Changing Times and, like all of the songs on the album, was written by frontman Frankie Beverly. Supposedly, Marvin Gaye’s sister-in-law put him onto the group back in the early 70′s– back when the group still called themselves Raw Soul. Gaye suggested the eventual name change but the spirit of their previous moniker remained a primary ingredient for the Maze sound ever since.
