(She’s) My Lady by Jayson Hoover
When I think of Vancouver I think of the Canucks hockey team, the former location of the Memphis Grizzlies and….that’s about it. I just don’t know much about Vancouver. But it’s 5,615 km away from Miami, so it’s understandable, right? But the more I research Vancouver for this write-up, the more it seems like a city I’d like to visit. For one, Vancouver is the first city to rank among the top-ten of the world’s most liveable cities for five straight years. Also, it’s considered the Hollywood of the North — ranking second to LA in the number of television productions and third to LA/NYC in movies/films shot in a city/location.
Vancouver must be nice. In fact, this week’s sampled artist, Jayson Hoover, visited there in the mid-60s and never left. He soon became immersed in Vancouver’s thriving soul and r&b scene during the 60s and 70s. He became part of a band that had a series of name changes during the latter part of the 1960s: Jason Hoover And The Epics (1965), The Trials of Jayson Hoover (1966), and The Anvil Chorus (1968). In the late 60s, the group adopted the psychedelic trend at the time. But by 1974, Jayson Hoover went solo and switched to a larger label. In 1975, he released a self-titled album which features this week’s sample. Here’s a rare video of the Vancouver soul/r&b scene which features Jayson Hoover:
