BeatSession12|20|10 (Christmas/Holiday Edition)

‘Tis the season to flip a Christmas classic for the annual Christmas/Holiday edition of TheWeeklyBeatSessions. This year we sampled The Christmas Song (aka Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire). However, the version we sampled is likely not the version you’ve been hearing on the radio all these years. Although Nat King Cole is on the vocals, the credits for this version is officially The King Cole Trio (Nat King Cole, vocal-pianist; Oscar Moore, guitarist; Johnny Miller, bassist). This is a rarer version which was recorded back in 1946. The more popular version by Nat King Cole was not recorded until 15 years later in 1961. The major differences are slightly different delivery of vocals, slightly different arrangements, plus it was the first version recorded in stereo. The song was written by vocalist Mel Tormé and Bob Wells. Word has it, that it was written during a blistering HOT summer in an effort “stay cool by thinking cool”.

Also, Generation ILL (@generationill) just wants to thank EVERYONE (participants and listeners) for taking part each week. This is the first year that we’ve done a beat session every week of the year (52 weeks, 52 sessions, hundreds of beats). And in that time, the collective and viewership has been steadily growing. We hit our goal of 10,000 hits earlier than expected, and I don’t see any sign of us slowing down. Make sure to check the the new items in the menu: “About WBS” and “WBSonTwitter”. Thanks for tuning in each and every week.

Also, Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to everyone. 4 days left, I should probably start my Christmas shopping…. peace, illa (@illa0804).
