BeatSession 01|03|11 (Teena Marie Tribute)

Original Sample:

Portugese Love by Teena Marie

With a career that lasted more than 35 years, Teena Marie aka Lady T (born Mary Christine Brockert) dropped 13 albums and virtually wrote, produced, and arranged all of her songs (with the exception of her first two albums). She started her singing career at the age of 19 and was first signed to Motown with Rick James as her mentor. This was fitting considering that she was raised on Motown and was greatly influenced by Soul and Funk music. Initially, there were some reservations on how the black audience would receive her (her ethnic origin was a mix of Portuguese, Italian, Irish and American Indian), which is allegedly why her first album, Wild and Peaceful, did not contain any pictures of her — just a seascape with clouds. Early in her career many people incorrectly assumed she was African American that was until she performed on Soul Train in 1979. She has repeatedly said that the music she sings is from the soul, and the soul has no color. In 1982 she got into a legal dispute with Motown regarding the release of her new material. This case spawned the “Brockert Initiative” which made it illegal for a label/record company to hold an artist under a contract without releasing new material. After Motown, Teena Marie was signed with various labels such as Epic, Stax Records, and even Ca$h Money.

Teena Marie died of natural causes just last week on 12/26/10. She was only 54 years old and just released her last album the year prior (Congo Square). Check her catalog when you get a chance, she has a lot of dope material which made it difficult to pick just one song to sample. She will truly be missed.

This week, we pay tribute to Lady T. RIP.
