Original Sample:

You Think of Him (You Think of Her) by Esther Phillips

In 1949, a young 14-year old girl by the name of Esther Mae Jones entered an amateur contest at a local blues club in LA. She was persuaded by her sister to join. Not only did she win the contest, the club owner, Johnny Otis, was so impressed that he gave her a recording contract and added her to his traveling revue. She changed her name to Esther Phillips after seeing a random gas station sign that had that name. The recordings that would follow during those months resulted in seven top-10 hits on the US R&B Charts, 3 of which went #1. In the early 1960s, her career was put on hold, due in part to her battle with a heroin dependency. But her come back in the late 1960s and early 1970s produced some of my favorite tracks from her. Listen to her version of Gil Scott-Heron’s “Home Is Where The Hatred Is”, and you can tell that the pain and misery felt in her voice is from a person who was going through her own battle with addiction. This song was the lead track off her Grammy nominated album in 1972, From a Whisper to a Scream. At the Grammy’s she got beat by Aretha Franklin — but when Aretha accepted her award, she went up to Esther Phillips and presented her the award and said that she should have won it instead.

This week 14 Producers from all around the globe come together to chop up this sample. Thanks for listening each week. peace, @illa0804
