I Don’t Wanna Leave You [Promo/Demo Version] by Debbie Taylor
Debbie Taylor is an enigma. I did a search on her online and google gave me 151,000 results. All the relevant sites about her had the same exact information; same exact phrasing too. Even wikipedia had the same information, verbatim. Date of birth is unknown. Background is unknown. What is known is this — her vocals are amazing and in spite of her relatively short recording career (1968-1975), tracks like this week’s sample helped her reach iconic status among soul music lovers and record collectors. Apparently, this recording was her last release before a sudden and unexpected exit as a professional recording artist. I did manage to find one random forum which had a random post about Debbie’s background and whereabouts. While I cannot attest to its validity, at least it wasn’t copied and pasted from every other site on the interweb. It says the reason for her sudden disappearance from the music industry was because she was “totally disgusted” by how the record companies treated her. I’d be speculating, but maybe this week’s sample isn’t about an individual, but rather the entire music industry at that time… (Industry Rule#4080). But word has it that recently she’s returned to performing — but only incognito, “… singing anonymously from the back of the stage at ‘other’s’ concerts.” Like I said… she’s an enigma.
On a side note, the version we sampled this week is actually the promo/demo version that was not commercially released. The UK version is about 1.5 minutes shorter and has a different arrangement.
This week, we welcome another new addition to the WBS family: Jericho Jackson originally from Jersey, but now reppin’ the Far North Coast, NSW Australia. Make sure you stop by his soundcloud (here) to check out some ridiculous sounds (e.g. Pimpin’ on Mars, Therapeutic Water Chops, Lunar Orbit Concerto)
This week’s another strong week at The Weekly Beat Sessions: a coalition of countries making beats, not war.
Make sure you tune in next week, when we pay tribute to Nate Dogg (RIP). peace, @illa0804
